Midnight zone

Refraction image

We’ve attached many names to our experiences of the ocean - the ‘rapture of the deep’ describing the delirium experienced when diving to greater than 200 feet - or the Midnight Zone, the depth at which light no longer penetrates into the ocean - at around 1000 metres. It’s in connection with the latter phenomenon that I have been experimenting of late - including the refraction of light as it enters water. As well as generating the image here, refraction, or the splitting and exploding of something that was once whole, is the theme I’ve been pursuing in my latest composition, for amplified piano and playback.
